The Endless Moment – The Painter Rolf Kuhlmann, 135 min. ©2021 A film by Claudia Schmid

Synopsis
Claudia Schmid followed the realist painter Rolf Kuhlmann with her camera for over a year, documenting the creation of two large-format double triptychs—from the initial preliminary studies right through to the finished paintings.

In his eight-part painting cycle, Kuhlmann reflects on current sociopolitical conditions, shedding light on their causes and interconnections from various perspectives, thereby creating a panorama of our times that is at once critical and poetic.

Against the backdrop of his paintings, he engages with themes such as democracy, identity and violence, consumerism and seduction, repression, flight, and mortality.
With a keen eye for the creative process, Claudia Schmid creates an intimate portrait beyond artistic clichés that documents on multi-layered dramaturgical levels creative success as well as severe crises and radical upheavals, which the artist courageously and honestly faces.
