In Between – The Artist Richard Deacon, 90 min. ©2012. A film by Claudia Schmid
Synopsis
Alongside Richard Serra and Richard Long, the British artist Richard Deacon ranks among the most significant sculptors in contemporary art. His existential engagement with space and form opens up a fundamentally new perspective. Crucial to his practice is his physical interaction with a wide variety of materials. His undulating, curving sculptures—characterized by their rhythmic interweaving—and his biomorphic spatial forms count among the most multifaceted works in modern sculpture.
Schmid follows the artist over an extended period, documenting various phases of his creative process: in his studio and the specialized workshops in London and Cologne; during the conceptualization of ideas; while crafting models for his wood, steel, or plastic sculptures; and during the realization of his large-scale works—including their on-site installation at museums in Strasbourg and Hamburg, the Lisson Gallery in London, Piccadilly Circus, and the Louis Vuitton flagship store in Singapore. Through a blend of cinematic observation and conversations spanning art, philosophy, politics, and society, the film creates a rich and intimate portrait of one of the most compelling artists of the modern era.
